How YOU Can Set Yourself Apart From Others in the Job Market

In today’s competitive job market, being certified in almost anything will put you ahead of the rest. Having a professional certificate will demonstrate your aptitude for a certain skill or knowledge area to your employer, and provide you with the confidence to excel. A certificate in sustainability denotes you as a leader in the new green economy and a champion for sustainability in the workplace, community, or school.

When comparing certification and Tony Wagner’s 7 survival skills, which we discussed in the previous post Sustainability Education and the 7 Critical Skills for Graduates, it is evident what is necessary to elevate your career. Wagner’s book, the Global Achievement Gap proposes methods, including the 7 survival skills, for American students to reverse the trend where they fall behind international competition. These skills align well with sustainability education learning objectives and GEF Institute’s certificate programs. The critical skills are as follows:

  1. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
  2. Collaboration Across Networks and Leading by Influence
  3. Agility and Adaptability
  4. Initiative and Entrepreneurialism
  5. Effective Oral and Written Communication
  6. Accessing and Analyzing Information
  7. Curiosity and Imagination

Though some of these skills seem obvious, many young Americans today lack them. Earning a professional certificate that addresses these key elements allows students to obtain these skills and separate themselves from the rest. Sustainability is one way to successfully get yourself, and your skills, ahead in the game!

Sustainability is a concept that is up and coming, especially in the business world. While it has yet to be permanently instilled in the education system, certificates in sustainability are extremely beneficial in the classroom and community. GEF offers online courses and certificates fit for everyone! The three progressive certificate levels include Sustainability Trainee, Sustainability Apprentice, and Sustainability Specialist. You can choose to advance in increments or go for the gold and start with Sustainability Specialist. GEF ensures that you will not miss fundamental knowledge or repeat information as you progress, which maximizes your learning experience. Read GEF Institute’s Certificate Overview page to discover which is best for you to start your sustainability experience!
